We gave you a quick overview of the Quality of Life updates to JPAS for 2026-27 at the admin conference. If you didn’t get a chance to see the video, it’s worth the 8 minutes to have a visual overview/demo of the changes. Either way, here’s a quick refresher of the three main changes:
1. NEW EVALUATION DASHBOARD
In addition to being where you’ll assign who is evaluating whom (by August 31st), it’ll also be where you go to check the status of evaluations at your school throughout the year. Just choose the evaluator from the dropdown and the sheet will auto-tabulate how many of each evaluation type each of you have for the year so that you can balance the workload across your team.
We’ve updated this process on the back end to pull directly from Qmlativ when generating your staff lists, so hopefully you won’t have any changes. However, if you do, just submit them here.
2. EVALUATOR NOTIFICATION
This one’s easy. We are required to notify each educator of what evaluation type they will have for the year. Normally, you did this. Now, we’ll do it for you!
Expect an email from me in early September to the educator and copied to you telling them what type of evaluation they are on (Full, Full with 2 Cycles, or Interim), who their evaluator will be (pulled from the Evaluation Dashboard), and how to submit evidence and access observation feedback reports in Perform.
3. SIMPLIFIED OBSERVATION TOOL
This is the change we’re most excited about. We’ve removed everything from the observation tool that doesn’t affect the score so that you can conduct the observation LIVE in Perform - no paper forms, no data entry in your office after the observation.
Format
The indicators that affect the score have been divided into two sections:
- Things you tally during the observation, and
- Things that you reflect on and rate for the evaluation as a whole
There’s also a new required comment section where you can leave feedback for the educator based on what you see. They’ll be able to see those comments - along with feedback on each indicator - before the next observation in the new Feedback Report they get in Perform. All comments will also be automatically included in the Summative Evaluation Form where you set the JPAS goal so that you don’t have to remember what you told them during observations.
You’ll also see new indicator descriptions for all indicators right inside the observation tool. Each indicator has a simplified marking system, meaning no more side-scrolling. Just tally in the form as it happens and if they hit the number needed for full points, you can stop counting. Based on field testing, this eliminates the need for a seating chart or frantic tallying and allows you to focus on what’s actually happening in the classroom.
Scoring
Each indicator can either help (+1), be neutral to (0), or hurt (-1) their score. All indicators have the same weight except High Leverage Strategies (worth 2 points instead of 1) and the evidence submission (worth 4 points each). At the bottom of each observation form and the evidence review, you’ll notice a FORMATIVE score upon Save Progress.
This formative score, along with your comments and feedback (helped, hurt or neutral) on each indicator is provided to the educator in the Observation Feedback Report. This will help both you and the educator along the way so there are less surprises at the end.
WRAP-UP AND WHAT’S NEXT
That’s it. We hope this helps you give the teachers you work with more feedback that leads to meaningful change, and removes a bit of the mystique that has surrounded JPAS for years.
So what comes next? We’re building a new evaluation system that will raise the expectations for all educators while simultaneously raising the bar for supports that ensure we can meet those expectations. Expect an ongoing process rather than an event. Expect it to push us all to stretch and grow, and to be a way to determine - in real-time and based on data - what to do next to improve. We can’t wait to get started, and we’ll need lots of feedback along the way. Stay tuned!
PREVIUS JPAS RESOURCES:
Note: All resources listed here are for historical reference only. While some resources still apply, not all are applicable to the current process. Because the entire system is being replaced in the near future, changes were made to improve the process, but we haven't combed through every resource on this site to check it's applicability. We will at some point, but just take everything below with a grain of salt.
